Spooky season is upon us, even if the weather in my neighborhood isn’t quite down to fall temperatures yet. It may be on the warm side but my neighbor’s house is festooned with spider webs and witches — Halloween doesn’t stop for global warming.
In the spirit of the season, I’ve put together ten books of horror that I love. These all come from my own library and range from those that terrorized me as a teen to those that gave me the shivers in the suburbs.
No rankings here, they’re all great.
The Cabin at the End of the World, by Paul Tremblay
It took three tries for me to read Tremblay’s novel of a family in peril, not because of any question of quality but simply because the opening scene filled me with so much dread I had to put it down twice. I’m glad I persevered because this is one of the best horror novels I’ve read in the past decade.
